When I awoke, I noticed my small boat was on dry ground, lodged between two rocks. I stood and searched for water, finding myself alone between a mountain and a valley. The sky above hung low and faint pink like blood in water. The trees, barren and burnt, smelled of fat on a fire.
After wandering, I found the edge of a river bed now just mud and dead fish. I found a flat rock stretching up to a point that followed the sun. Three words stood out from the rock. Lost. Mine. Go.
I tried to carve a fourth word in the stone, but my fingers gave and bled. I forgot the word and wept.
Night came, and the sky darkened to crimson. I found footsteps in the mud running away deeper into the valley. I turned back and saw a shape moving on the mountain, a desperate shadow clawing upward. It motioned for me to follow.
