    Hey, it's cold.

Yesterday I reinstalled Windows XP, which took about an hour, and installed Mandrake Linux 10.1, which took around 30 minutes because I install a lot of things. I previously used Mandrake 10 and have used Mandrake for years. Here's my short review of Mandrake Linux 10.1 Official.

First, the bad. Well, I wouldn't say bad, just little hiccups. As usual, I had to install special software not packaged with Mandrake so that I could watch DVDs. DVDs that I purchased with my own money. It's not really Mandrake's fault, just the DVD Consortium. Xine seemed to run slow at first. Post Processing was turned on by default. At least it was on mine. I turned that off, and beautiful DVD video was back. K3B did not burn CDs right away. I had to go into the settings and hit the "search" button. It found cdrecord and cddao and works just fine now. I had to turn off DVD and CD autoplay. I hate that stuff more than anything. Xmms was not set to use the right sound system and would crash, but an easy fix.

Second, the good. Installation, while I installed a lot of stuff, went smooth and quick. My video card and sound card were both recognized and set up just fine. I am now running a dual monitor setup. Fonts are crisp and clear. 10.1 seems a little bit faster than 10, which was already fast. My ethernet card and cable modem were detected and automatically setup. All my hard drives were set with the correct permissions, which means I can write to them just fine. Superkaramba works perfectly with 10.1. I had to make some tweaks in 10 for Superkaramba to behave. I really didn't have to do much configuring. I did when it came to the dual monitors and customizing lilo with my boot picture. Other than that, Mandrake 10.1 seemed ready to run out of the box.

KDE. I use KDE. I spent probably an hour tweaking it with font sizes, images, icons, and stuff like that. I am never happen with the default look of anything. KDE always seems too barebones with outdated icons. But there are plenty icons out there to make up for this. And KDE isn't Mandrake's responsibility. Neither is Gnome, which I haven't logged into yet to see how it is.

I am already enjoying a newer OpenOffice Writer, and The Gimp 2.0 is really nice. And I plan to take advantage of the new bittorrent and bittorrent gui thingies that you can install. There are also little things of convenience like a better organization of the screensavers and the system control panel.

So yeah. Try Mandrake Linux 10.1. It just keeps getting better.

From a Hole in the Sky

13 Stories of Horror, Madness, and Religion make up this dark-kudzu collection. A city run by angels with demanding burial rites. A white van jostling with clowns and warnings about sleep. A weeping pastor with a dead man in a boat. Homicide, Suicide, Jesus, and The Devil. To join a family, you're going to need some stitches. Kids today on their way to cut grass and play cowboys and injuns'. A hole in the ground where poor John Henry met a foul ending. And unholy birthing machines with a chosen one. All this and more. Where do bad things come from? They come FROM A HOLE IN THE SKY.
