I've been thinking about adding a "word of the day" feature to my site, mostly likely on the blog page. I love having a new word for the day. Have a look at what today's word was from wordsmith.org:

    wroth (roth) adjective

    Extremely angry.

    Religion and Science.

If I were to take apart my car and learn how every little piece works, would that disprove the existance of Henry Ford? What's the difference with Science and God then?

EVP. Electronic Voice Phenomena. I'm into a lot of Ghost stuff. EVPs are just one of them. I really dig this kind of stuff. I've been experimenting with my own EVPs. Last night, I recorded almost 5 hours of me sleeping. To my surprise, I do not snore. I was able to get a few odd things. None seem to be your typical EVPs that have audible or almost-audible words. I just got some odd sounds.

I did not have the TV, fan, or AC on. The computer was on, there's nothing in it that could click. Earlier today, I recorded myself turning on my bed, attempting to snore, snort, and breath heavy and loud. These things showed up at least 3 times louder than the oddities that I recorded and were easily recognizable.

I am sharing these oddities not as proof of anything nor as a good examples of EVPs. I am sharing just some oddities that I recorded. Who knows what really goes on while we sleep? We spend almost half of our lives asleep. There's bound to be something happening.

You may want to right click and Save As.

Last night I spent four and half hours building and rebuilding the Smithsonian Institute's Build Your Own Engine kit for my nephew Boo. Guess what doesn't work? Well, it does work and it doesn't. The lights and gears and shafts all work. But when you plug the electric motor in that turns everything, it'll turn almost one time and then locks up. I took the thing apart and put it back together several times. I have no idea how or where it's locking up, but it is.

The toy does teach you about engines. I know more about them now then I did before. But there's also something cheap about the thing. Plastic always has inherent problems. Parts can be different due to temperature and/or bending and stretching. This makes things not fit well together, and that leads to things locking up. The screws are also cheap, stripping easy. It was not meant to be taken apart and put back together. Hey, wait a minute. That's exactly what it's like with modern cars. I change my mind. This is an ingenious toy.

So far I have survived Christmas. There's been plenty of ups and downs, mostly downs. But I'm still here. And that's really all I wanted out of the holiday was to get through it. There's got to be a less stressful and less fattening holiday out there.

    It is cold.

I drove my car today. I took my mom up to the Mining Museum, which is like 500 feet away. We don't have blocks here so I can't say in blocks. Maybe a block over. I don't know. We drove down the road and turned up the hill to the museum. Everything was just fine. I usually go from there down a road about a half mile to St. John's Baptist Church and turn around. After yesterday's troubles, I decided not to do that today. So I turned back down the hill and stopped at the turn. I waited until the road was clear and pressed on the gas. The car did not go and almost died. Traffic was coming so I put it in reverse and waited for the traffic to clear again. This time when I pressed the gas, it died. I started it back up and waited on traffic. When clear, I pressed on the gas and the car died. I started it back up and waited on traffic. When clear, I pressed on the gas and the car died. No, that's not a type-o. It died again for a total of three times. The next time the traffic was clear, the car ran just fine, and we made it back home.

It doesn't matter what is going on in my life, I can always think of my car and get depressed. But there's nothing I can do about it today. And there's probably nothing I can do about it tomorrow or next week. I'm going to keep starting it just so it can warm up, but I'm probably not going to be driving it every day for a long time.

Boo, my nephew, is over. He just opened a gift, a modern day Transformer. It came with a CD that has the first episode of Transformers: Armada (I think). I couldn't really stand to watch it. It's horrible what people have done to the Transformers. They're not the ones I grew up with. Seeing what has happened to Optimus Prime is like if George Lucas went back and tinkered with Star Wars... wait... he did what? Well, at least Spielberg has left E. T. alone... wait... oh no. Not that too?

They keep changing my childhood. I'm the only one allowed to do that.

I just got back from driving my car. I try to drive it every day. I didn't yesterday because of the rain and the fact that I couldn't keep the car running while in reverse. Today, my car died a lot. And one time I tried to go up a hill and started going backwards. That one is new. I've never gone backwards with it in drive and me pressing on the gas. That can not be good for the car. It just can't be.

I do have some good news on the car. My thermostat started working. I can again control the heat in the car. Usually, it's either on high or off. Now I can turn it down half way. But I didn't use it today because I wanted the engine to get nice and warm, which I'm sure it really did. In fact, it had a funny burnt smell when I got out. That can't be good either.

In other news, I'm editing my short story "Angel Bound." I can't wait to share it, but it takes time. You can't rush these things. The story will be ready when it's ready.

I've been looking back at 2004 and what I've written, what I've done. I'm proud of FROM A HOLE IN THE SKY, a collection of published and original short stories. I'm proud that I reworked HAUNTED: THE SECRET OF THE HANGED MAN, a novel. I am really proud of what I've done this year. But of course, I wish I could have done so much more, written so much more. That's a lot in my head that needs out.

Also, I've been thinking about why I sometimes get rejected. Well, why I mostly get rejected. I write dark fiction. My characters sometimes use foul language or do violent things. Sometimes things are gory. Sometimes things are sexually explicit. And let's not forget religion. I love to write about religion. I don't go throwing these things in unless they belong in the story. "Angel Bound" for example, is sexually explicit, violent, and a bit gory. But there is no foul language. HAUNTED is another example of a story that doesn't have any sexually explicit or violent scenes. There isn't any foul language either. But usually, a story has at least one thing in it that I feel sometimes hinders publication. Somebody is bound to be offended by something, and I am usually writing about that something. I have a special place for rejections that tell me how offensive I am.

Unfortunately, I believe this is not an accurate view of my writings. I am not Mr. Shock. I do not write senseless violence, sex, and gore. Yeah, I've written violence, sex, and gore, but unless there's a reason for it to be there, it's not there.

I write what I write because that's what I write. I write what I want to read. At least I've always stayed true to that. You won't find me writing a story of the moment, something of a fad, or something that sells at that very moment. I'm not writing so that I can "cash in." I'm writing because I want to. And sometimes, I feel that I'm writing because I have to. 2004 has just strengthened my beliefs in that.

    Hey, it's cold.

Yesterday I reinstalled Windows XP, which took about an hour, and installed Mandrake Linux 10.1, which took around 30 minutes because I install a lot of things. I previously used Mandrake 10 and have used Mandrake for years. Here's my short review of Mandrake Linux 10.1 Official.

First, the bad. Well, I wouldn't say bad, just little hiccups. As usual, I had to install special software not packaged with Mandrake so that I could watch DVDs. DVDs that I purchased with my own money. It's not really Mandrake's fault, just the DVD Consortium. Xine seemed to run slow at first. Post Processing was turned on by default. At least it was on mine. I turned that off, and beautiful DVD video was back. K3B did not burn CDs right away. I had to go into the settings and hit the "search" button. It found cdrecord and cddao and works just fine now. I had to turn off DVD and CD autoplay. I hate that stuff more than anything. Xmms was not set to use the right sound system and would crash, but an easy fix.

Second, the good. Installation, while I installed a lot of stuff, went smooth and quick. My video card and sound card were both recognized and set up just fine. I am now running a dual monitor setup. Fonts are crisp and clear. 10.1 seems a little bit faster than 10, which was already fast. My ethernet card and cable modem were detected and automatically setup. All my hard drives were set with the correct permissions, which means I can write to them just fine. Superkaramba works perfectly with 10.1. I had to make some tweaks in 10 for Superkaramba to behave. I really didn't have to do much configuring. I did when it came to the dual monitors and customizing lilo with my boot picture. Other than that, Mandrake 10.1 seemed ready to run out of the box.

KDE. I use KDE. I spent probably an hour tweaking it with font sizes, images, icons, and stuff like that. I am never happen with the default look of anything. KDE always seems too barebones with outdated icons. But there are plenty icons out there to make up for this. And KDE isn't Mandrake's responsibility. Neither is Gnome, which I haven't logged into yet to see how it is.

I am already enjoying a newer OpenOffice Writer, and The Gimp 2.0 is really nice. And I plan to take advantage of the new bittorrent and bittorrent gui thingies that you can install. There are also little things of convenience like a better organization of the screensavers and the system control panel.

So yeah. Try Mandrake Linux 10.1. It just keeps getting better.

BitTorrent rules. This morning at like five I started downloading Mandrake 10.1 Official using BitTorrent. When I got up later to finally start the day, they were already finished in a few hours. Mandrake 10.1 is three CDs. It usually takes me all day using Mandrake's FTP sites. I'm finishing up burning the 3rd disc as I write this. Then I'll start backing things up, and then I install. I've also got to reinstall XP because XP has problems. So today is a rebuilding day for the ole' computer.

I just got up to go to the bathroom. Right before I get there, a little piece of white notebook paper scurries past me. I thought it was a white rat. I see it's a piece of paper and pick it up. On it written not in my handwriting are three letters in black ink: CIN. I have no idea.

    It is cold.

Tomorrow, which will actually be later today -- it's late, I believe I'll finally finish typing in my latest short story. Then there's editing to do...

I'm currently writing one where the characters always want to argue with themselves. If they keep this up, I'm going to put them all in a hole in the ground so nobody will ever find them.

Yesterday, jh2media had their first known copyright violation. Somebody was using the background image from the Criminal Intent site as their background. They were actually hot linking to it. I contacted the person, and they removed the image. If anybody notices any images in places where they shouldn't be, please let us know. And if you see any of our ideas out there, let us know that too. There's a menu out there that looks a little bit too much like the submenus on Hopeful Sinner that may need a second look.

I hate peas. And I'm glad I don't like them because if I liked them, I'd eat them. And I hate peas.

Did I mention that it is cold?

I just got back from driving my car around. I took my nephew up to the Mining Museum that's just a hill over. They have a train out front and a couple of huge pieces of equipment used way back when.

My car drive just fine, but that's the way it does: fine one day and no-go the next. Though today, there has been two new things. The back doors won't open from the inside. I thought somebody had turned on the child safety locks. I don't have child safety locks.

I miss video games. I spent most of my time writing, typing, querying, and so forth. I'm trying to get as much done in a day as I can because there are going to be days when I can't do a lot of writing related stuff. Also, there are tons of stories in my head that want out. So I'm usually in a hurry to get them done. It's like a conveyor belt, and I'm mass producing stories. This is not a complaint. I just want it known why I'm so busy.

This morning before I tried to go to bed -- I ended up watching a special on Oliver, a supposed Chimpanzee. He ain't human. He ain't chimp. What is he? -- I posted a pic of the Krampusse parade in Munich, Germany. People dress up in Krampusse, which are animal hides and they "follow Saint Nicholas from house to house in December each year to bring luck to the good and punish the idle."

I thought about so many little captions to add to the pic. Stuff from "The Pope has had enough" to "Santa is finally going to deal all with the naughty kids." I also thought about commenting on Pagan and Christian beliefs mixing, which of course has never ever happened before. No, of course not.

Oh well. Back to typing in a story.

Dimebag Darrell, Three Others Killed In Bizarre Ohio Concert Shooting

Dimebag Darrell, guitarist for Pantera and Damageplan, was one of at least four people fatally wounded during a bizarre shooting at a concert in Columbus, Ohio on Wednesday night.

According to Columbus NBC affiliate NBC4, Dimebag — real name Darrell Abbott — was among the fatalities resulting from the incident, which occurred during a Damageplan performance at the Alrosa Villa in Columbus. Authorities did not release the names of any of the other fatalities to NBC4. Columbus police told MTV News that a total of four people were killed and two wounded, and that the death toll included the assailant.

One witness told the NBC affiliate that a man jumped onto the stage during the first song of the band's set and began firing a gun. According to the witness, the man fired several shots at the band before being tackled by club security. One of the survivors is in critical condition at a local hospital, while another is in fair condition.

"A Columbus police officer, when he arrived, engaged the shooter, and the shooter is also dead, and if the officer hadn't acted when he did and how he did, we'd probably be looking at more dead, because this guy was actively shooting," Sergeant Brent Mull, public information officer, told MTV News.

"We have 200-plus patrons that we have sequestered inside three city buses," Sergeant Mull explained. "We are interviewing them one by one. The ones that were inside and witnessed this, ran for their lives and were in fear for their lives. They are victims too, and we want to take care of them."

As news of Dimebag's bizarre and tragic demise rippled through the metal community, the news was met with shock and sadness.

"I'm speechless," friend and Rob Zombie/Ozzy Osbourne bassist Rob "Blasko" Nicholson said. "This is totally unreal. Dimebag is a f---ing legend and this is total bull----."

"This is insane and this is beyond travesty," Killswitch Engage frontman, and former Damageplan tour partner, Howard Jones said. "This is beyond anything I've ever heard. This shouldn't happen in or outside of the rock and metal community. He will be missed and mourned as a person, as a musician, and as a friend."

Just by looking at my blog you can tell we've had a few days of severe weather. I was up at 5 this morning watching live coverage of the weather, watching mesocyclones and shear markers that could be tornados with arrows pointing at Walker County. Always fun. But over time, they weakened and just became thunderstorms. So I went to bed.

Right now, the sun's out trying to dry things. It's surprisingly warm, but I imagine that'll go away soon. Everything seems slimy out side, like you could slip on the air. Hopefully that'll go away too.

I just love Alabama weather. It's never boring.

    SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT
    NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE BIRMINGHAM AL
    401 PM CST MON DEC 6 2004

...POTENTIAL FOR SEVERE WEATHER IN CENTRAL ALABAMA LATE TONIGHT INTO
    TUESDAY...

RELATIVELY WARM AND MOIST CONDITIONS HAVE RETURNED TO MUCH OF CENTRAL
ALABAMA. AS A POTENT UPPER LEVEL SYSTEM APPROACHES...IT WILL SET OFF
SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS ALONG AND AHEAD OF THE ASSOCIATED SURFACE
COLD FRONT. DUE TO THE UNSEASONABLY WARM AND UNSTABLE AIR MASS IN
PLACE...AND STRONG WINDS IN BOTH THE LOWER AND UPPER ATMOSPHERE...
SOME OF THESE THUNDERSTORMS WILL LIKELY BECOME SEVERE.

AT THIS TIME...THE GREATEST THREAT OF SEVERE WEATHER APPEARS TO BE
    DURING THE PRE-DAWN HOURS TONIGHT...THROUGH MID-DAY ON TUESDAY. A
BAND OR LINE OF STORMS IS EXPECTED TO MOVE FROM WEST TO EAST ACROSS
CENTRAL ALABAMA DURING THAT TIME. CONDITIONS ARE FAVORABLE FOR SEVERE
    STORMS...WITH A POTENTIAL FOR TORNADOES.

AN ADDITIONAL THREAT OF THIS SYSTEM IS HEAVY RAIN. THE POTENTIAL
EXIST FOR ONE TO THREE INCHES OF RAIN...GENERALLY ACROSS NORTH AND
WEST ALABAMA. A FLOOD WATCH FOR FLASH FLOODING IS IN EFFECT FOR
WESTERN SECTIONS OF THE AREA TONIGHT AND MAY BE EXPANDED OR EXTENDED
    INTO TUESDAY.

EVERYONE ACROSS CENTRAL ALABAMA SHOULD CONTINUE TO MONITOR LATER
FORECASTS AND STATEMENTS...AND KEEP UP TO DATE ON THE LATEST
REGARDING THIS POTENTIAL SEVERE WEATHER EVENT.

...FLASH FLOOD WATCH IS IN EFFECT TONIGHT...

THIS WATCH REPLACES THE PREVIOUS WATCH THAT WAS IN EFFECT THROUGH
    TUESDAY EVENING.

A WARM FRONT HAS LIFTED INTO CENTRAL ALABAMA THIS AFTERNOON ALLOWING
WARMER AND DEEPER MOISTURE TO RETURN AHEAD OF AN APPROACHING STRONG
UPPER LEVEL DISTURBANCE AND ASSOCIATED COLD FRONT. SHOWERS WERE JUST
NORTH OF THE WARM FRONT THIS AFTERNOON AND WILL GRADUALLY LIFT
NORTHWARD THIS EVENING AND INTO THE TENNESSEE VALLEY. SHOWERS AND
THUNDERSTORMS AHEAD OF THE COLD FRONT WILL ARRIVE LATE TONIGHT...
GENERALLY AFTER MIDNIGHT TO PARTS OF WESTERN ALABAMA. RAINFALL
AMOUNTS OF 1 TO 3 INCHES ARE POSSIBLE IN THE STRONGER CONVECTION.
RECENT RAINS HAVE LEFT THE GROUND FAIRLY SATURATED SO ANY HEAVY
DOWNPOURS FROM THUNDERSTORMS COULD RUNOFF QUICKLY...CAUSING CREEKS
AND STREAMS TO FILL QUICKLY...LEADING TO POSSIBLE FLASH FLOODING.

A FLASH FLOOD WATCH MEANS THAT FLOODING OF SMALL STREAMS, CREEKS AND
OTHER DRAINAGE AREAS ARE POSSIBLE IN AND NEAR THE WATCH AREA. PEOPLE

Last night I had this dream that I was trying to save orangutans from the snow. No joke. I remember having to go outside, pull the primates from under snow, and drag them inside.

Tom Brokaw stepped down from the NBC Nightly News last night. The one of the earliest memory that I have of sitting down and watching the news involved Tom Brokaw. I believe it was April 25th, 1986. It was the Chernobyl disaster.

I sat on the floor in my grandmother's living room while my mother was in the kitchen trying to make corndogs and hushpuppies. It was her first attempt and her last. I remember waiting on the food to get done and watching Tom Brokaw explain what had happened at Chernobyl. I sat there waiting, worrying that the cloud of radiation was going to circle the globe and kill a bunch of people here in the US, including me.

Eventually, after Mr. Brokaw explained as much as he could, I became convinced that I was not going to die from radiation.

This all happened in 1986, which included another news watching event, the Challenger accident. We watched that live at school. Sometimes, I've said 1986 was my best year, but looking back, there were a lot of horrible things that happened in the world.

What if deja vu is a form of pattern recognition other than that feeling of "this has happened before?" By pattern recognition I mean... well, think of a stop sign for a moment. When you see one, you know what it is without reading it even if you've never stopped at that sign before? When you see a stop sign you've never seen before, you don't go, "I've got deja vu." You just recognize it as a stop sign.

What if there are certain ways that our existence -- life, world, universe -- is organized? And deja vu is when you recognize these "ways." Maybe our brains have the capability to recognize these patterns and process them, but areas of our brain have been switched off or disconnected. An area of your brain figures out the pattern recognition part, records it, process it, the works. But it's not connected directly to the conscious part of the brain. Maybe it's connected to the subconscious part. Maybe that's why we have that moment of deja vu. Something from the subconscious has leaked into the conscious.

But what are these patterns, these "ways?" The hidden gravity behind being? The train tracks that we all roll on? The strings of time? I can't help but to think of the puzzle game Tetris for some reason. If you don't know, Tetris is a game where different shaped blocks slowly drop from above. You arrange them to fit -- hopefully -- into each other and form lines that disappear. If you don't fit enough together in a certain amount of time, the blocks pile up and the game is over.

I've often wondered what would happen if I stopped having deja vu.

I have a lot of deja vu. I have a lot of deja vu.

Kids today on their way to cut grass and play cowboys and injuns'. A hole in the ground where poor John Henry met a foul ending. And unholy birthing machines with a chosen one. All this and more.
