Last night I booted into Windows XP, as you know I love to do. ZoneAlarm said there was an update available. I clicked download and installed it. I rebooted as ZoneAlarm wanted me to do. I booted into a Blue Screen of Death. With all my problems I've had in the last few weeks, I started to freak out thinking it was hardware. I rebooted and again got the BSoD. I rebooted into safe mode and uninstalled ZoneAlarm. I rebooted and everything worked just fine. I downloaded and installed the latest ZoneAlarm and got another BSoD. It said something about the file vsdatant.sys. I looked this up online and it is a problem with Windows and ZoneAlarm. On ZoneAlarm's website, they suggested unplugging your connection to the internet and installing. That did not work. So, in Windows worlds, I've switched to Sygate's free firewall. This just reminds me how much I love Windows.
I'm nearing the end of a short story I've been working on for a while. In fact, it may not be all that short anymore. I don't even have a name for the story yet, but I'm sure one will come. I'm not entirely sure how the story will end. I'm looking at a "Who will survive, and what will be left of them?" situation. I can't wait. Some of the characters in the story are driving me crazy. Last night I watched House of Flying Daggers (directed by Zhang Yimou, Hero, and staring Zhang Ziyi, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon). I was amazed at House of Flying Daggers. It was one of the most beautiful movies I've ever seen. I couldn't help but to think of Ridley Scott and Legend. But Legend is a western, fantasy movie with plastic sets trying for a different type of beauty (and non-beauty). House of Flying Daggers is beautiful but in a real way using nature as different sets, even mixing seasons.HoFD is a fantasy movie and a love story. I first thought it was going to be a fairly simple plot and straight forward, but as the movie went on, these little plot twists kept coming up. The acting is pretty good. The action is stunning and artful, almost like dance routines with violence. Yes, some of it isn't believable, but this is a fantasy movie. And it is so beautiful, vivid, full of life. Even people's deaths seem full of life. I can see how western audiences may not like HoFD. In many films like this, emotions often seem over played, but to me, emotions are just characters like everybody else. I really do enjoy this style of story telling. It makes me feel like I'm being told tradition and myth as well as a story. ![]() Tuesday, April 19, 2005
On Sunday morning, my computer died. For the past month or so, I had been having problems here and there. I knew I had real problems because I use Linux, not Windows. Windows just has problems. I knew mine had to be hardware. Not a week before, I reinstalled Linux and the problems didn't go away. So on Sunday, when I rebooted, I couldn't X to run. X is a graphical server thingy that runs a gui in Linux. Without a gui running, you get a command prompt but nothing else.
I had a decision to make. I could re-install again and deal with the little problems and even risk things getting worse, risk loosing important data. Or, I could just accept that my computer is dead, which means stripping it for parts and building a new computer with spare parts that I had laying around. I decided to build a new one. There was a bit of a nightmare going on with the computer business. When I got home Saturday night, I checked my e-mail, and I had an e-mail from a publisher wanting to see the rest of a submission. I'd had sent sample chapters earlier. I put off replying to the e-mail, sending the rest of the story until Sunday morning. I didn't get a chance to reply. I knew I could e-mail them later explaining what had happened and get them the story. I still didn't like the idea of having that e-mail lost. But thankfully, I was able to recover all my e-mail just fine. It was a very weird thing to take my computer apart. I remember how much work and time went into it. I had all kinds of lights inside, fans, and crossing wires. I'd draw a picture of how I had the thing wired but it'd be just a bunch of mobius loops on top of each other. I have the custom dragon fan grill in front of my keyboard. I'm not sure it'll ever see another computer. The next one I build, the next real one, probably won't be of the same style of my old one. I thought about putting new guts in my old case, maybe even use the grill again, and use it as a server. I don't think it should be a regular computer again. I did not, by the way, take off the Frankenstein badge on the front of the case. The badge, which I think is a poor name for it, is just a logo on the front where DELL or IBM would go. Since I bought my case, it didn't have a logo on it. I had to add my own. The computer was also built in a time when you couldn't buy a case with lights in it or a window cut in it. I had to cut that myself. In fact, I've installed two windows. The first didn't have a hole for a fan, and over time, I needed to a add a fan. So I replaced that window with one with a hole for a fan. Ah, so many good memories of cutting my hands and shocking the crap out of myself. Hey, there's a new Pope, Pope Benedict XVI, aka Joseph Ratzinger. Joseph Ratzinger was a Hitler Nazi Youth. Of course, he's not a Nazi now. But he still looks like an extra from The Omen movies. With all the computer stuff going on, I forgot to write about BTA stickers. The lead singer of Beyond The Ashes delivered to us, jh2media, the stickers that we had designed for them. It was nice to see them, see that we earned our money. We didn't print the stickers of course. We just designed them using the dimension that band gave us. Saturday, April 16, 2005

So the Spy Kids' mom, Carla Gugino, is naked in Sin City. To me, that makes up for sitting through Spy Kids 3. As for Sin City, I love that movie. It is such a piece of art, and really and truly a comic book movie. It made me want for comic books again, the good ones. I'm probably going to re-read what little Frank Miller stuff I have soon. Unfortunately, Sin City isn't a movie for everybody. It's just an odd movie to some. It really is an ultra violent noir film... with Micky Rourke, who may have stolen the show. Yes, Micky Rourke.
jh2media, my friend Jon and I, have upgraded our portfolio site, jh2media.info. It is now a good showcase of our new transparent shadow technique. Check it out. We're very proud of it, and it took some type to develop it. Our biggest hurdle was Internet Explorer -- there's nothing new there. But in the end, everything worked out very nicely. Every now and then, I like to take a chance on a movie, buy a DVD without actually seeing the movie first. Yeah, I know this isn't the smartest thing to do sometimes because there are a lot of crappy movies out there. Yesterday, I took a chance and bought DEAD BIRDS.
One more thing, they used prisoners from some Alabama inmate reintegration program to help make DEAD BIRDS. Ever since this whole time change thing, I've just been sleepy. Maybe this is my body's way of saying, "Stupid, time didn't change, just your clock." I wish we didn't do daylight savings time. It makes me feel like I've eaten turkey and drank lots of milk. |

Buy my book.
From a Hole in the Sky 13 Stories of Horror, Madness, and Religion make up this dark-kudzu collection. A city run by angels with demanding burial rites. A white van jostling with clowns and warnings about sleep. A weeping pastor with a dead man in a boat. Homicide, Suicide, Jesus, and The Devil. To join a family, you're going to need some stitches. Kids today on their way to cut grass and play cowboys and injuns'. A hole in the ground where poor John Henry met a foul ending. And unholy birthing machines with a chosen one. All this and more. Where do bad things come from? They come FROM A HOLE IN THE SKY. The Alabama Weather Blog A blog of the current forecasts, watches, and warnings for the state of Alabama. The posts are automatically generated from E-forecast and E-warn e-mails from my local ABC Network Affiliate, ABC 33/40. The images are from the National Weather Service. The site will refresh itself every ten minutes. |
