Lately, I think Yahoo has been a doing a better job at searching than Google. I've heard people say that, but I just thought it might be anti-Google talk. Maybe it's because I'm often getting different search results with Yahoo that makes me think it's doing a better job.
As for which one looks better... neither. I'm tired of Google's white page. It's white. It's too bright at night. If they can let me move stuff around on their ig page, why can't they let me change the background color. As for Yahoo, it's probably the most cluttered website ever created. It's horrible. They need to split up into five or twelve different sites. But at least Yahoo will let me create my own Yahoo page and customize it slightly. There's actually more than a few different ways of customizing it, but they haven't changed in years. Tuesday, January 24, 2006

Has anybody seen the new Intel/Mac commercials? You know, the ones that says that for years Intel has been in dull little boxes dutifully doing dull little tasks? Is it me, or is that a slam on... No. Couldn't be.

Security Now 22: The WMF Backdoor
"Steve Gibson has been working with the WMF vulnerability and is now convinced that this is an intentional backdoor into Windows added by Microsoft!" Steve's website is grc.com. He says he'll know more in a week, but right now, he says the WMV exploit was put into Windows on purpose. Steve suggested that maybe this was put into Windows on purpose so that even if a user has turned off everything they could, Microsoft could still run code on a user's computer. I think a bad programmer who worked on Windows may have put this one in as his own personal backdoor into Windows. Even if that isn't the case, I bet that's what Microsoft will say even if they admit to this. With that said, Steve does think Microsoft put it in themselves and the discovery was an accident. He's a smart guy. He knows how these things work. He discovered all of this because Microsoft did not provide a fix for older versions of Windows. If they had, he wouldn't have been looking for a fix for those computers himself. And to find a fix, he had to figure out how the exploit worked. And when he did that, he came to the conclusion that it was on purpose by Microsoft. And just to make me feel better when I do use Windows, when asked if there could be more backdoors in Windows, Steven said, "Yes." I just had a thought. This is in all versions of Windows. Is it likely that there's a bad programmer who has worked on every version of Windows? That would be Windows 95, 98, 98 SE, Windows Me, Windows 2000, and Windows XP. That's a lot of code. If there are programmers who worked on every version, it's got to be only a handful, right? Tuesday, January 10, 2006

YouTube - Windows Vista: First of a Kind Features -- All stolen from OS X.
Somebody has taken the audio from a Windows Vista demo and done everything described in the demo on a Mac running OS X. It is disturbingly word for word what the M$ demo guy is saying. I wonder if M$ will ever realize they can save money by just buying copies of OS X and just re-selling them with M$ stickers on them. Sunday, January 08, 2006
I have added a link to My Flickr page on the side menu. I will be updating the Flickr page every now and then. A good clue as to when I've updated it is when a photo or two shows up on my blog.

New High Quality Temporary WMF Exploit Patch Available
There is a really bad problem with all versions of Windows. All versions. Previously, there was a fix for the problem from Microsoft that unregistered a DLL. The problem was that, according to Steve Gibson of GRC.com, the M$ fix was "lame." The M$ fix broke a few things and didn't do a good job of fixing the problem. This new fix does not break things and actually fixes the problem. So re-register the DLL first (if you applied M$'s fix) and then install this patch. When M$ patches this problem for real, you should uninstall the patch. Unfortunately, this patch does not fix Windows 95 or 98, but neither did M$'s DLL fix. Sorry 95 and 98 folks. Easy to use instructions are on the page linked above. You can also get detailed information on this problem. And this problem has exploded on the internet. And what is this problem? Without doing anything other than looking at website, opening any e-mail, or using your instant messaging software, a bad person can put anything they want on your computer. And it does not matter which web browser you use or version of Windows. So please apply this fix now.
