Thanks to IFC, I have now seen all three Coffin Joe (Zé do Caixão) movies, At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul, This Night I Will Possess Your Corpse, and Awakening of the Beast. After just finishing Awakening of the Beast, I can say it's my least favorite. This Night I Will Possess Your Corpse is probably my favorite. Though, I have to say, these are not Oscar winning movies. They're indie movies made in the late 60's in Brazil by a guy in a top hat with an unibrow. They are important to me because they are important horror movies, nice little rest stops on the road to where we are now. The actual character of "Coffin Joe" is a very different kind of character. In all three, he plays a sort of existential villain.
Here's a nice review of all three movies at Mondo Digital. Also, if you put Dawn of the Dead and Coffin Joe together, you end up with White Zombie. Wednesday, January 24, 2007
Deja vu. I just uploaded yet another video in the Media section. This one is The Last BTA video. It was for my friend's band, Beyond The Ashes. The band broke up before I could really finish it, but I'm sharing it anyway. The music is taken from one of their last shows. It's a mash-up of different songs.
The video is taken from the Walt Disney animated short, Education for Death. It was made in 1943 as anti-Nazi propaganda. The clip I found is an obvious VHS rip. I had hopes to do something stylistic with it and/or something that would clean up the clip, but the band broke up so I stopped working on it. Now you can enjoy it. Saturday, January 20, 2007
I've been feeling a little under the weather the past two days. Maybe it has had something to do with this past week being cold with rain and mud. Doesn't matter. Me feeling bad is your win; I finally got around to uploading a new video. Click on Media and have a look at Pressure.
Pressure was a video I did for my friend's old band, Beyond The Ashes. The band's no longer around, and he's currently working on another band. I'll post about that when I know more. The video is made up of clips from the 1922 German Documentary Haxan. Haxan is about witchcraft and mental illness. Yes, it's from 1922. It was also shot with color tints, which were popular in the silent film era. There should be some more old BTA videos up soon. I just need to find the time to do it. Wednesday, January 17, 2007

NORAD looking for Russian rocket in Wyoming
When I first saw the above news header, I got a chill and flashed back to The Day After. When I was a child, and much too young for such things, my mother made me watch The Day After. I remember having nightmares about atomic blasts hitting Birmingham. Even as an adult, I still have the occasional nightmare. The movie has been on TV recently in the last couple of months. I need to sit down and watch it again. Oh, the Russian rockets in Wyoming. A booster rocket re-entered the atmosphere over Wyoming Thursday. No injuries have been reported and military officials are looking for the remains of the rocket. You know, this kind of thing isn't supposed to happen. You do extensive calculations about trajectory to know where all your leftovers are going to land. There's nothing like an inbound rocket with a Russian flag painted on the side to take you back to the old days. Monday, January 01, 2007
Well, 2006 is over. It was a strange year because nothing really big ever happened the entire year. I hope 2007 will be a little more exciting.

Buy my book.
From a Hole in the Sky 13 Stories of Horror, Madness, and Religion make up this dark-kudzu collection. A city run by angels with demanding burial rites. A white van jostling with clowns and warnings about sleep. A weeping pastor with a dead man in a boat. Homicide, Suicide, Jesus, and The Devil. To join a family, you're going to need some stitches. Kids today on their way to cut grass and play cowboys and injuns'. A hole in the ground where poor John Henry met a foul ending. And unholy birthing machines with a chosen one. All this and more. Where do bad things come from? They come FROM A HOLE IN THE SKY. The Alabama Weather Blog A blog of the current forecasts, watches, and warnings for the state of Alabama. The posts are automatically generated from E-forecast and E-warn e-mails from my local ABC Network Affiliate, ABC 33/40. The images are from the National Weather Service.
